The ability to focus on things socially as well as how they interact and influence each other. Giddens and Sutton, The emphasis is to look at the world critically. The focus is therefore on both the personal and social forces when trying to understand the social construct of society.
The Focus is towards acknowledging the importance of school structure, recognizing that individual problems are seen to be established from both horizontal and vertical social structures. Horizontal social structures are seen to be the social relationships and communities social and physical characteristics.
Vertical structures can also be referred to as social inequalities, which is the way in which society rules people in a hierarchy. A personal issue is also a public issue.
Therefore, for the issue to be resolved for the individual, it requires the social changes. Mills argued that one of the main tasks of sociology was to transition personal troubles into public and political issues Giddens and Sutton, Thus people may look at their own personal challenges and problems as societal issues, and connect their own individual experiences with the workings of society.
The Sociological Imagination enables people then to distinguish between personal troubles and public issues. In with a new democracy in South Africa the government was challenged to rebuild and redevelop a new education system for those previously in an inequitable and disadvantaged schooling system.
The post Apartheid government inherited a highly unequal education system- the distribution of education funds was primarily for white schools, access to basic education was not even, discriminating educational systems and poor quality of teaching and learning in schools Christie, ,pg.
Mils theory focuses on a micro level, which is the social integration in a specific situation and a macro level, which is the focus on a broad social structure, the society as a whole.
It is an integration of both. The Micro level has implications for the individual while the macro level impacts the whole society. The macro context of this was that a good basic education was not given to the majority of the population.
This Macro context of the South African education system as already noted, was marked by multiple factors, which impacted on the individual learner. The new government was set with the test of changing the existing education system.
Mills postulated that if society were to change at all, change would have to come through those who had the knowledge and would use it correctly. Apartheid allowed for the minority to hold the majority of power, a few elites. Not only did the new government change the existing curriculum but also had the overwhelming responsibility to address issues around violence, social inequalities, and uncertainties of teachers, responsibilities towards change and a lack of resources.
In order to overcome what would seem to be unsemountable difficulties and challenges, Mills theory of sociological imagination can be explicitly seen that in order for educational change, the individual and society must be seen together.
Thus as Mills pointed out, social science should work in the field holistically rather than focusing on one area of social science such as psychology, economics and sociology.
Mills viewed social problems as having roots in society and being shared by many others. The apartheid era did not allow for equal and fair access to educational opportunities.
The educational problem clearly had its roots in the historical and political context of the South African apartheid system. Adopting Mills theory of Sociological imagination enable us to understand the events that have lead to a poor educational system which in turn impact on the individual.

The educational problem I have chosen to address has not only got to do with the lack of funding to public schools, rather is has got to do with the governments lack of political will towards monitoring those funds and ensuring they get put to good use.
According to Agang leader Mamphela Ramphela, Solving South Africa's education problems, among others, requires political will which the current government does not have. Ramphela points out that the government had spent R billion on education and the country was not getting value for money.
South Africa spent more on education per capita than any other country, while the education system continued to underperform. The Government was incapable and unwilling to take the political risk for change.
